Music

The Music Faculty provides a leading program in boys’ music education that is both diverse and inclusive; encouraging a lifelong connection with music through active participation: locally, nationally and internationally.

The program

Hutchins offers a comprehensive program for all students from Pre-Kindergaten to Year 12. We seek to be both inclusive and exclusive, providing opportunities for all our students to engage with music while also catering for students who have decided to make the study of music a specialty. From Years 8–12 students can choose from a wide range of elective music courses including those that allow students to pursue music as an area of interest, through to senior level courses offered in conjunction with the University of Tasmania.

Education in music and poetry is most important … because rhythm and harmony permeate the inner part of the soul more than anything else, affecting it most strongly and bringing it grace, so that if someone is properly educated in music and poetry, it makes him graceful.

Plato

The instrumental music program at Hutchins engages professional music specialists who provide a diverse range of instrumental tuition. In conjunction with this, music specialists are also engaged in the classroom music program, which involves every student from Years 3–7 being given the opportunity to learn an instrument. Supporting the instrumental tuition is a wide-ranging ensemble program that includes bands, orchestras and smaller ensembles. Involvement in any one of these ensembles has been proven to enhance students’ music skills and experiences and your children are encouraged to take part.

Supporting the instrumental programs is an equally strong choral program. Choral groups are divided into four groups: Year 2 (The Cubs), Years 3–6 (The Pride), Middle School, and Senior School. Each individual choir meets regularly with students encouraged to participate.

Private instrumental music tuition

Private instrumental tuition is available to all students. Tuition occurs on a one-to-one basis with a qualified music tutor during normal school time, before or after school. Each lesson lasts for 30 minutes. Lessons are on a rotating timetable or can be fixed depending on individual needs. Please click on the link below (magenta box) to sign-up.
